Quiet Books for Church

I Have been wanting to make a Quiet Book for my kids for some time now, nearly a year ago I started collect supplies and researching it online, the more I researched the more terrified I became. Quiet Books are a HUGE project there was now way I was going to be able to make one. There are so many options for pages and different ideas on how to create them I was completely overwhelmed. Which is why it took a year and a church calling for me to start and finish my first Quiet Book ever. I personally am thrilled with the results mostly because no lie it only took me a week to make. just a couple hours here and there and badda-bing-badda-bang DONE! If you have researched quiet books then some of the ideas will look familiar to you I got a lot of the pages and templets from http://www.sugardoodle.net/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3752&Itemid=200008 other templets are from google images. The hardest part of making a Quiet Book is organizing supplies. I will try to break it down for you. First things first you need fabric. I used fat quarters from Walmart you only need 3, iron them and cut in half hamburger style. (I hope you all remember hamburger/hotdog style from kindergarten) You also need batting I used pellon firm or extra firm about a yard is all you need cut into 6 equal pieces roughly 8' square. I am going to list the overall instructions first and under each picture will have list of supplies and step by step instructions.InstructionsLayout Quiet book pages before beginning. You need to pin 6 pieces of pellon insert to 3 of the fabric rectangles. When sewing pages make sure to sew thru pellon as well to hold it in place.Once pages are created layout quiet book again you have 6 pieces of rectangle fabric, the order of the book is up to you as long as front and back cover are on the same piece of fabric.1-Front and back cover2-faith in every footstep/Count your tithing3-Future Missionary/10 tribes4-etc56Turn over pages 2, 4, 6Place page 1 on page 2, 3 on 4, and 5 on 6Double Sew around the edges of double rectangles leaving ½ in seamYou should now have 3 movable fabrics with 4 pages eachCut little lines around seam to create a frayed lookWith front and back cover face down Places fabrics onto of each otherSew zig-zag line down center of book to create fold.

Family Fun

The weather is just so great out here that we thought we'd show the kids how to fly a kite. We should have gotten a kite that actually works, we spent more time trying to get the kite to fly above 2 feet then we did playing with the kids. They had fun anyways thanks to all the spare bikes around TVA. Asa has staked claim to a certain little trike, he and Alice fight over it all the time, I have a stinking cute picture of her standing on one of the back wheels trying to climb into the seat, too bad I can't post it.
We also went to the Aloha center and took some family pictures next to the Christmas trees. Nannie did a pretty good job for point and shoot.
Recently we've just been making friends and playing at the park. It seems like when the kids are not napping we are outside playing, its great fun.
Asa is getting the hang of going sheshe in the toilet he knows how to go by himself and often tells me to stay on the couch so he can do it alone. He also knows how to put on his own clothes he doesnt do it very often it take about 20 minutes if I force him to do it so I often just do it for him.
Alice loves to attack Asa. She does it on purpose she kills me. She's walking now, she started about a month ago she's pretty good she looks really goofy and cute though she holds her arms out to balance her and she pushes out her belly.

A Time to Give Thanks

Thank you for Thanksgiving!! What a wonderful time; a time to give thanks for the many things that we sometimes take for granted like baby wipes, a time to think of others before our selves, and a time to feast.
What a feast we had. We made enough food to feed our building. We started the day before making pies and rolls. The next day we finished the feast with sides and the turkey. It was a small gathering us and Nannie, Kaleo came later and helped "clean up." Aunty Mo and Uncle Matt and a few others came by later and visited.

Sadly our external ports are still not what they should be so I have no way of posting video but we do have some on our phone...*thought* Steven can I text from phone to email and publish on blogger? Alice is crawling okay so its really a slither like an army crawl but she gets around so fast. Every time she gets on her knees to go she does a face plant so she still working on it. She's at that stage where she has to be with a parent at ALL times and usually that parent is me. I'm not complaining I love that she wants me because Asa never did and when she was a newborn she refused to be my friend she loved all the girls in Sessions. It gets challenging when I am trying to make dinner so Ashley or Vaina has her and she screams the entire time. Mostly though she's stinky adorable.

Last night Aunty Vaina gave Asa a brand new coloring book with tree-bark colored pencils. It was too late for Asa to play with it so we took them to the room so when he awoke the next morning he would have some entertainment. He didn't notice the book until it was almost time to leave for breakfast, when he did find it though he was very excited. After 10 or so minutes of drawing he said he was done and put the coloring book and the pencils away on the shelf. When we told him it was time to go to the main house he wanted to take the book with him. Kapono tried to convince him to leave it but that just caused Asa to grab 1 coloring pencil. On the way out the door I told Asa that if he took it than the other boys will color in it. He looked at the coloring pencils and said "Kalama!" and promptly went back to grab a pencil for him once he got back to the door with 2 pencils in hand he remembered something "Ariihau" he screamed and ran back to grab one more pencil. So instead of us convincing Asa to leave the coloring book and pencils behind so they don't get ruined he brought the book and 1 pencil for each of his cousins.

being out here has been really good for him. He didn't have anyone his age to play with so I thought he was a perfect child cause he would always share with his Aunties in Utah. With cousins close to his age though its been interesting seeing my son the youngest of the 5 boys be such a bully. We've had to take toys away and put him in time out many times. Its hard to teach him "don't hit" while your giving him a spanking. They have their good days and bad days though, like this morning its a very good start. He's learning a lot more than just sharing too. He now knows the sounds of vehicles; motorcycle, truck and car. He knows what an airplane is and gets so excited he probably pees himself when he sees one. on the sheshe (pee) note he knows what he's doing and most of the time tells us right after he evacuated his bowels that he wants to go to the toilet. He can answer questions with; yes, no, I'm done and so on. We can ask him a series of questions and he isn't just saying a word he knows what he wants.

There are a lot of us in the house so a quick family tree. Kaumana (oldest son) married to Vaina 2 kids Ariihau (4) Kalama (2), Kapono (2nd oldest) married to Rouie 2 kids Asa (1) and Alice (6 months) Lanakila (kapono's Twin, lives with his in-laws) married to Laryssa 2 kids Logan (2) and Thomas (6 weeks) Kaleo (22 for one more week) single, Koa (living with his in-laws) married to Ashley sorry for not adding the rest of the fam but they are not included in the story..however that doesn't mean we don't love you. Asa can say everyone's name including mine a little something he picked up from his cousins. Every time one of the boys says Aunty Rouie Asa says ouie! Ouie! Aunty Vaina unless I say Vaina is mammo (french mommy). The other night all the brothers went to see the last airbender as they got out of the car Asa scream out Daddy! Koa! Tutu (tutuman) Papa (Kaumana, another something he picked up from his cousins) and kleo!
btw if you ever want to make Asa happy just feed him chicken, however he is not a fan of chicken nuggets.
on a side not both mine and Vaina kids were born in sept and dec and some of us may or may not be trying to get prego what if our # 3's are born in the same month too..weird

Big Island

We finally made it to Hawaii and it is B-E-A-utiful! and hot... We've been very busy trying to get things in order today Kapono is job hunting and figuring out what to do about a vehicle. Asa and Alice are loving it, well Alice doesn't have much of an opinion she sleeps a lot. But Asa is having a blast running around with his cousins and being outside without a jacket. Today out of habit he asked for his jacket before going out side, he put it on went out and after 30 sec came back in and threw it on the living room floor. Great News! the Bartons are set up on a network here and no other computers can be added which means we can not use our computer to update our blog and since our usb drive is broken we can not add pictures, so once again only a text blog nothing else. Not to brag but it really is great being back here, my skin instantly felt better. I had chapped lips when we boarded the plane in Utah and not even a week later its completely better without using moisturizer. the best part is that there are 5 cooks in the house, its not like I did a lot of cooking in Utah but now I dont even have to make dessert, my sister in law, the oldest barton boy Kaumana's wife Viana's mom owned a bakery so she picked up on her skills.

I know I said that I would be updating this on a regular basis and then didn't post anything for awhile, well let me explain. You know how I mentioned everything was happening too fast well.. We took a trip to Grand Junction recently (that will get its own post with pictures) and then the next day left for Wolf Creek (which will also get its own post with a lot of pictures) and now we are back home with 3 days to pack before all the commotion starts again. Right now I am waiting for my pictures to download on to another computer and then copy to a jump drive so I can add them to our picasa so they can go on here. When I say those above activities will have their own posts I mean it I just am unsure as to whether they will get written in Utah or Hawaii.

Everything is happening tooo fast. Kapono only has like 6 days of work left and we have his graduation tomorrow, vaction from the 7-14, luau for life on the 14 girls day on the 15 Nannie's semenary grad on 16, Bubba comes on the 17th, that thursday is nannies hs graduation then the family reunion and on Tuesday the 25th we leave..
I've been trying to pack things up cause I know I wont have time later, its harder than it used tobe. Every time I start on Asa things he comes behind me and grabs it out of the box. Yesterday I tried packing his books and he had to read every single one one more time, which is cute but it took 3 hours to pack a box. sadly the only book left out is "my first thousand words in polish" thats a hard language and ever since I tried to pronounce things Asa has started talking gibberish again.

Sessions Hike

We intended to end the year with a hike out to the waterfall, roast some hot dogs make smores and just have a good time. We got about 9 people out so we loaded up the cars and took off. when we got out there though it was freezing, we're talking 44 degrees with a wind chill of, I don't know what wind chill is measured in but it was so cold that after 30 secs my ears hurt and I had to jump up and down to stay warm. Luckily the Institute was putting on dinners all this week for finals so we rushed back to campus. We were able to find a hibachi so the night wasnt a total waste. In fact it turned out even better because when we go it to the hall we had even more people there and even some of the Koreans came down for a bite. I love the kids here at Sessions, they've made being Head Residents so fun, if most of them weren't leaving too then it would be harder to go. The moral of the story is if it doesnt work out because the winds wants to eat you try try again in a building surrounded by people you love, oh but make sure the building doesnt catch on fire.

So they say not to compare your kids and Janet always yells at me if I tell Asa "why can't you behave like your sister" But I cant help it, its amazing how different they already are but the same also so this next blog will be all about their difference and alikeness. Asa was sitting up unassisted and not falling over 3 days after he turned for months. I remember this so clearly because it was 2 days after we left Hawaii and I was disappointed that Tutu and Tutuman didnt get to see. Alice is still working on it but basically has it down at four and a half months. Asa started eating mush at 3 months exactly and eat it for dinner and breakfast everyday along with breast feeding clear till 10 months. He ate mush at least once a meal everyday till he was a year old. He tried to eat babyfood but he hated the meat and Kapono ate the fruit. Alice Loves babyfood except the meat of course, who could like that..gross, she eats it nearly 3 times a day. Asa has basically never slept through the night off and on when he was little little he would get in a pattern and sleep about 4 days out of 7 but then we would take a trip or he wouldnt go to bed at bed time and he would inevitably end up in our bed. He still to this day makes his way to Kapono's side of the bed to join us about 2 am everyday. Alice on the other hand sleeps through the night about 6 out of 7 nights and stays asleep anywhere from 7:30-10:30. When she falls asleep I am able to put her in her crib and walk away. I dont worry that she'll wake up becuase she puts herself back to sleep. Asa has to be held in cradle position on the couch by kapono with the tv on we have to keep him like that till his thumb falls out of his mouth and then its safe to move him, otherwise we get to start the whole thing again. Alice found her thumb when she was a couple days old and has enjoyed it ever since, Asa didnt find it till 6 months and gave himself so nasty looking sores from sucking to hard.Asa could reach for and grab things with his index finger and thumb and 3 months, I never worried about him putting something in his mouth because to this day if he eats something he tells me about it. Alice has no desire to pick something off the ground she is only interested in it if it looks like it will fit in her mouth and gets very upset if it doesnt make it there soon. Asa shed twice when he was a newborn it was basically disgusting. Alice didnt shed at all. Nick my brother in law was saying that smelly lotions and oils cause shedding this might be true because with Asa we lotioned and oiled him everyday and with Alice I sort of forgot to. Alice talks all the time, and she needs to be the center of attention. If she is in a crowd of people and we dont speak to her she will get upset and return all the focus to her. Asa talks all the time too however he didnt start talking till her was closer to 9 months. Asa being older understand a great deal however he only chooses to listen when it benefits him.

Alice can pretty much sit up on her own now, I still barricade her with pillows because when she decides she's done she throws herself backwards. Most of the time she just hunches forward and looks like half and Alice but recently she has been sitting up with out help while she attacks a toy. I'm pretty sure she's teething with all the drooling and the fever and the attacking of any body part that gets put in her mouth but as of yet she doesnt have anything to show for it. We took pictures of her and her new cousin and Alice looks gigantic. She really isn't at the last appointment she weighed 14lbs I think and she's 23" tall, you know what I didnt go tot the last appointment so I could be really wrong on that one. She rolled over the other day from her belly to her back, she's not a fan of belly time. it was so cute we had her out in the living room and Janet put toys within her reach, after a couple minutes which were probably only seconds that felt like minutes she decided she had enough on her tummy and rolled over to her back,she was so happy about it she started giggling just from us grinning at her. Alice is basically the cutest baby in the world and everyone that doesnt have their own kids or nieces and nephews agree with me. Her hair is getting fairly long in the back we can put a band on her and her hair will cover it. She is 4 and 1/2 months, she eats baby food regularly and sleeps through the night mosts nights.

The other Day Nannie and I went to Smiths to get a very specific shopping list. Nannie let Asa push the little kid cart since he can kind of see over it and Alice was in her car seat taking up the whole cart so the food had to slide under her to sit. We were looking at the tortillas near the meat isle when I lost Asa. He was there one minute looking at the tortillas with me and the next gone. And then we hear him. It was like a slow motion movie here comes Asa hands raised high holding a 2lbs block of cheese running as fast as his little feetzies will go yelling CHEESE, CHEESE. When he got to the cart he lifts Alices seat and slides it in. Now I'm not a cheese fan like the rest of my family and apparently my kids are so I take it out. Asa decided that that meant "mom doesnt like colby lets try mozzarella" so off he went and back he came with another 2 lbs block of cheese, mozzarella this time yelling CHEESE CHEESE. Nannie took that one out and we let him pick a 1 lb block because it was evident we were not leaving that store with out some CHEESE.

Lost Journal

I lost my journal. I was hoping to find in while we started packing to move but so far its a no go. Asa and Alice are being way stinking cute and I'm starting to forget what they're doing because I don't have a journal to write it down in and then Kapono reminded me of our blog. It made so much sense, I'm the one that begged Steven and Vanessa to create this thing and then told everyone that they had to get one Steven even made a homepage so if we forget someones link we can go there and I dont even use it. But with Steven and Vanessa gone I should post things since they actually read blogs and I dont call as often as I should. So Steven and Vanessa this is for you. Miss you guys!

So awhile we had an issue with the sewer. the neighbors thought that our lines were connected and that our sewage was backing up into their basement, super gross, but after digging up our yard and making us stay in a hotel for two nights its was discovered that it is their own dodo and we moved back home.

Dinner catches fire for the 2nd time

Let me tell you about the first time that we caught our dinner on fire. It was a normal afternoon, well i guess it was more evening then afternoon. Rouie wanted to make fried potatoes. So she got all the four potatoes cut and the oil heated. She was doing a great job dropping them into the HOT oil. It was only splashing a little, not to bad. Then she got a huge handful and drop, right into the oil. There was a huge splash, we think cause it happened so fast, because after that there was a huge flame. It went up the wall and out. It was amazing, so crazy. Then it quickly put its self out. There was only some burn marks on the stove and walls, which we still have yet to remove some of it.

The second time that we caught dinner on fire was last night. I wanted to have a romantic dinner with Rouie. So i got the table all ready, place mats, china, silver and candles. It was perfect. Then I got dinner ready. The menu was speghetti, salad, and garlic bread. I got everything ready but the bread, it was still in the oven. Rouie and I sat down and started "talking," when I randomly to check on the bread. To my amazement the entire oven was on fire. I thought to myself for one second and then reached into the oven and grabbed the flaming pan and threw the flaming bread into the sink and turned on the water. There was smoke everywhere. But to our luck our smoke alarm has no batteries so it didn't make annoying noise.
Dinner was still romantic.

Cows in the road

We were on our way home from the Manti Temple when we randomly ran into some small traffic on a road which gets well none. That was weird. Then we saw what was holding us all up...it was a whole herd of cows walking down the road. Some things you only see in small towns of good ol' Utah.

On Friday the 7th we were supposed to go to the Forgotten Carols concert but once again we got snowed in, so Instead we built gingerbread houses, out of grahmcackers, ours broke a couple times this is the end result.

On November 30, 2007 a Friday night to be exact it started to snow. Kapono and I headed down to EC to give Celeste and birthday gift, the bext day we were going to go to SLC and spend the weekend with Steven and Vanessa. The drive down there was probably the scariest drive to East Carbon that I have ever had. Kapono was driving for the very first time in the snow, in a very tiny city truck that had no traction on the wheels. Kapono couldnt have been more excited about it, he was having the time of his life. The roads were covered in a thick layer of snow and we were sliding all of the road (kapono thinks I am exagerrating, but I am not) Once we made it to EC I informed him that we would not be going back up that night. Over at celestes house we had a snow ball fight, we took Phaydra out in the snow, she didnt like it that much. Kapono did though, he went crazy out there. Needlessly to say we did not make it to SLC we barely made it to price the next day. but it all worked out we found out who our new Branch Pres is.

Thanksgiving

This year I had a sudden desire for pies. I baked like 9 different ones for Thanksgiving, it was soooo yummy. There was double layer pumpkin, apple pie, cherry pie, lemon, oreo cheesecake, peanut butter and regular pumpkin, there must have been more, oooh yeah the banana pudding, its not a pie but for thanksgiving purposes it counts and the last one was a banana cream pie. There wasnt room in the fridge for all of them so we had to eat them that night. :)

No Internet

So we have a ton of pictures to post and stories to go with them, but sadly we do not get the internet at our house, well sometimes we do when the neighbors have a good signal :) We called to get internet service but for some reason the guy couldn't make the computers recognize it. So you have to wait for the pictures but I can write little blurps about the Happenings of Rouie and Kapono.

While attending the EC ward Kapono volunteered us to go to the nursing home and give the Family Home Evening, Since I am devoid of any talent kapono basically did it all.

On our way out to East Carbon to pick something up or what not. Kapono was driving our truck and I followed in the Witties Nissan Murando when all of the sudden I get a call from Kapono saying that he turned on his lights and the car died, he was now coasting. We were fairly close to the junction so we pulled over to wait for my parents.

We had to leave it there at the junction for a couple days until we could get it fixed. The alternator was bad, and since repairing it we have had to take out all the lights, its a tempermental machine, But it runs :)

Phaydra

Phaydra Rowen Kennedy is such a little cutie-head, Kapono and I steal her every Sunday to go to church. Sadly we wont be going to the East Carbon ward anymore so we wont be able to have her as a discration. It aslo means that we wont get to see Celeste as much either, sad.

Surprise for mom and dad

Awhile ago after Janet got back from camp and mom and dad decided to take a vaction down to Cali, we took the opurtunity to do the kitchen and dinning room floor. We pulled everything out and pulled up the nasty carpet that has probably been there since the place was built, it was very fun and sticky. WE laid down lamanent tile, in the kitchen we did a black and white checkered and the dining room is wood dakine that reminds me of a double wide. But it was tons of fun, we got Nannie and Bubba to help and we slept on it (to help it settle) :)

Snow

On our way back from Manti we decided to go through Huntington Canyon. It was kind of scary, we didn't know if we were actually going the right way or not, I had only been once and Kapono had obviously never been, we were in our truck and it had previously had problems and we started seeing patches of snow.

Apartment

On October 2, 2007 Janet Lowe went innocently to the Wellington Post office with Her Father and Mema. Little did she know that she would run into a neighbor and that neighbor would have a grand design of his own. Upon entering the building she ran into the man. He politely made small talk, for he was not sure which little Lowe this was. He went directly to the Father and told him straight out that he has an apartment in Price next to the college that he would like his children to rent. Janet hearing this ask "how much a month? how big is the deposit? what was the adress?" The matter was quickly resovled for at 5pm that very evening Janet, Rouie and Kapono met with the man's wife. She was a pleasent lady and was delighted to show the apartment in hopes that it would be rented soon. We had not been in the place for 3 mins when Kapono and Janet both declared that they would take it on the spot and where should they send the check.
Its a quaint duplex with a carport and storage outside, we share the back and front yard with the other tenant. from the front door you walk directly into the livingroom where you behold the staircase. Rouie and Janet immediatly thought about how much fun it would be to throw Robert from it. Kapono thought about all the christmas decorations he could hang from the banaster. It's a fairly small living room, dining room, and kitchen but it has a closet which stores the most exciting news. Our very own washer and dryer. The place came furnished with kitchen table, sofa, gaint chair and random white rocking chair. The kitchen has a dishwasher and a microwave. Upstairs is the bathroom with new light fixtures and cabnites and the two bedrooms; one ober gaint master bedroom and one the size of my closet. Janet choose the latter (what a nice girl).

Very First Post

This is our fist post of our new blog and I am terribly excited about it. What to write... Well Kapono and I just moved into our first apartment. I would say its great to finally have place of our own, but Janet is living with us however, it's nice to be so close to the school.
